Joina City is Harare‘s latest shopping mall. Nestled in the heart of a buzzing business district, this shopping mall has become a beacon of hope for an economy on the recovery path. The story behind the building is nothing short of inspirational. I was in my first year at High School when construction began. Over a decade later the building still was not complete as sanctions, a hyper inflationary environment and political challenges stopped the project dead in its tracks. For years nothing happened, and none thought it would ever be complete. When construction began it was supposed to be the biggest mall in Southern Africa, but by the time the mall was finished bigger and more elaborate projects where completed all around Africa. Never the less, Joina City remains Harare’s beacon of hope, a testament to the resilience of Zimbabweans…..it stands tall, high above the Harare skyline…..a reminder to all, to never, ever give up!
